Creative Art
There are many concepts children learn through creative art such as fine motor development, eye hand coordination, a sense of exploration, intuition and intention. It can foster the expression of feelings, creativity, imagination, and awareness of concepts such as colour, mass, size and shape. Children also learn social skills during creative art such as cooperation and sharing. During creative art we also develop vocabulary and language along with complex thinking. In our daycare we value children as individuals who are unique. With art for our youngest friends most experiences consist of discovery and introduction to the tools we may use in creating, this can include paint brushes, sponges, feathers, straws, house hold items, paper, cardboard, natural items, glue, paint, play dough and a variety of paper the list could be endless as we use our own imaginations exploring creative art. There is no right or wrong way in our discovery, we might feel, touch even taste as we explore. As we grow and are developmentally ready, we will move forward with more complex aspects of creative art such as a project with a beginning and an end, mixing and creating colour, working with clay and pastels. There are learning opportunities in all aspects of art and this even includes a concept that has mixed reviews with educators and parents and this is colouring a picture. Some educators feel there is no learning value, some parents feel that this takes away a child's creativity. I view colouring as a mindful activity that can help children with focus, fine motor control and a feeling of purpose. At the same time, it can be frustrating and children may want to throw the page away if they feel pressured that it should look a certain way. This can be a learning moment for the child to understand how to work through the frustration and at the same time if a caregiver or parent model from the beginning that this experience is pressure free the experience and the ability to be creative will flow. Here are some of our creative art experiences.
